Tom's Response

Last month we thought we wouldn't hear from Tom again. We were wrong about that. We admit it when we are wrong. Here is his response.

How old do you think the earth is? 6,000 years? What supports your theory? A rehash of previous creation stories written in a book by some idiots several thousand years ago? Did life originate being "spoken" into existence? I believe in evolution because the alternative is so ridiculous that only a fool would believe it.

Tom

How would you answer someone like this? Here is how we did.

Dear Tom,

Thank you for making our point far better than we ever could. Your last sentence says it all.

"I believe in evolution because the alternative is so ridiculous that only a fool would believe it."

We asked you for any kind of scientific evidence that dead things can come to life through natural processes. You could not produce any such evidence because there isn't any.

We asked you for any kind of scientific evidence that proves dogs can give birth to kittens, or that any species can give birth to any other kind of species. You gave no answer because there is no such evidence.

We asked you for any kind of scientific evidence that shows the Earth is billions of years old. You didn't supply any. Instead, you displayed your ignorance by asking questions about our position on the age of the earth. If you had bothered to read our web site, you would know that we have already addressed that topic several times. In fact, in September we began a two-part essay describing geologic evidence supporting a young Earth that we personally investigated on a dinosaur dig in Montana. Our dinosaur experience cannot in any way be characterized as, "A rehash of previous creation stories written in a book by some idiots several thousand years ago".

It is clear that your acceptance of the theory of evolution is a purely emotional reaction that has apparently been greatly prejudiced by some previous unpleasant religious experience.

We aren't asking you to accept any religious teachings. We are only asking you to evaluate the theory of evolution (in isolation from any other theory of the origin of life) to see if the theory of evolution has a firm scientific basis. We believe that if you do, you will see that undeniable scientific evidence shows that, given enough time, living things naturally die. There is absolutely no scientific evidence that, given enough time, dead things come to life. There is abundant scientific evidence that creatures reproduce after their kind, with limited variation. There is no scientific evidence that living things reproduce other kinds of living things. We further believe that if you examine the supposed scientific evidence for an old Earth, you will see that the conventional interpretation of the data is based on invalid assumptions that presuppose an old Earth. The data is generally more consistent with a young Earth.

We are encouraged that you are obviously troubled because it means you will probably look for answers to your questions for yourself. We are convinced that if you do that, with a skeptical mind that demands proof for every assertion, you will realize that the theory of evolution can't possibly be true. Once you reject the theory of evolution, it will allow you to look for another explanation for the origin of life that is more consistent with the physical data we find in the real world.

Sincerely,

R. David Pogge

If he responds again, we will let you know.
